Written for traverso, viola d'amore and harpsichord

The score of Antichthones has two sides, like a L.P. record. The musicians determine the order in which they want to perform the two parts. Side-A is a combination of trivial melodies, crippled swing and clenched aggression. Side-B is serene and somewhat sultry, an obsessive repetition with small variations. Antichthones [an-tik-thuh-neez], in geography, are those peoples who inhabit countries on opposite sides of the Earth: the antipodes. In 2010 Merijn Bisschops wrote the tryptich Antipode I, II or III. Three solo pieces for the same instruments as those used in Anthichtones. In the Antipode tryptich the instrument in traditional tuning is playing together or dueling with recordings of that instrument while it was being played detuned.
